Exports & publishing
Manuscript and self-publish formats — DOCX, PDF, EPUB.
Two formats, three file types
Books export in one of two formats:
- Manuscript — the standard format agents and editors expect for submission. Standard cover page with your contact details, 12pt double-spaced body, indented paragraphs, scene breaks marked with a centered
#. Outputs PDF or DOCX. - Self-Publish — a fully customizable, print-ready layout for self-publishing. Outputs PDF, DOCX, or EPUB.
There are three ways to open the export dialog:
- The three-dot menu on a book card.
- Right-click a book card for the context menu.
- The export button in the editor toolbar while you’re on a scene — this opens the dialog with just that scene preselected.
A live PDF preview on the right updates as you change settings, so you can see the file before saving it.
Self-publish controls
The dialog’s left side is split into three tabs: Format, Content, and Author.
Format
- Font — Serif (Times New Roman) or Sans-Serif (Arial).
- Font size — 10, 11, 12, or 14 pt.
- Page size — six trim sizes covering mass-market, trade paperback, hardcover, and letter (5×8, 5.25×8, 5.5×8.5, 6×9, 6.14×9.21, 8.5×11 inches).
- Line height — 1, 1.15, 1.25, 1.5, or 2.
- Print layout — adds gutter margins sized for binding. Leave off for digital-only PDFs.
- Scene break — choose an image from a library (or import your own) or use a centered text glyph (
***,❦, anything you type). - Indent paragraphs and Drop cap toggles.
- Even (left) page header and Odd (right) page header — pick from None, Book Title, Chapter Title, or Author Name for each side.
- Page numbers — Outside Edge, Centered, or None.
- Suppress header on chapter and Suppress page number on chapter — keep the first page of each chapter clean.
- Chapter image size — Small, Medium, Large, or Full Width. The image itself is set per chapter or as a draft default.
- Start sections on right-hand page — adds a blank page before chapters that would otherwise land on the left side, the way printed books do.
Content
Pick the draft to export, then check the chapters and scenes to include. Scenes can be toggled individually if you want to leave one out.
This tab is also where you toggle front matter — Cover Image, Title Page, Copyright, Dedication, Table of Contents, Foreword, Introduction — and back matter: the world’s full Glossary as a back-of-book reference.
Author
Your pen name as it should appear on the title page and copyright page. Defaults pull from your settings; you can override them per export.
Manuscript controls
Manuscript format is fixed, so most of the Format tab is disabled in this mode. The Content and Author tabs still apply: pick the draft and chapters to include, and provide your legal name, address, phone, and email for the cover page.
EPUB
Vellerune writes EPUB files directly, with no intermediate Word step.
Per-entity export
Most world entities — characters, locations, magic systems, glossary entries, and notes — export to DOCX, either individually from the entity’s detail view or in bulk from the list panel for the whole set.
Plots export to DOCX from a plot’s detail page. There’s no bulk plot export — each plot is exported on its own.
Storylines export from the canvas as a PNG image. The canvas toolbar has two options: capture just the visible area, or export the full diagram.
You’re never locked in.
